Japan's Shinkansen Construction Site Hit by Data Forgery Scandal
According to a report by Japanese media outlet "Hokkaido Shimbun" on July 22: In the construction site of the Hokkaido Shinkansen extension to Sapporo, fraud involving falsified concrete quality test data has been discovered. At least three instances of data forgery have been confirmed so far.
The incidents occurred during the construction phase of the Hokkaido Shinkansen extension project, specifically in the section between Kusakabe Town, Niki Town, and Akai River Village, including part of the Nittoson Tunnel.
According to Japan Railway Transport Bureau, at least three cases of falsification have been confirmed in the quality control testing of tunnel concrete. Specifically, the water content in the concrete was allegedly altered to meet standards; however, these quality standards are fundamental conditions ensuring the durability of concrete.
The Railway Transport Administration is currently investigating the safety status of completed construction zones, but it remains uncertain whether this will affect the scheduled completion and operation timeline.
