U.S. Lawmakers Urge Trump to Ban Import of Chinese Aquatic Products

Recently, bipartisan members of the U.S. Congress and Administration China Committee (CECC) sent a letter to President Trump, urging him to issue an executive order that would comprehensively ban the import of aquatic products harvested by vessels linked to China or processed in China into the United States.

The signatories include CECC Chair, Republican Senator Dan Sullivan; Co-Chair, Republican Representative Chris Smith; as well as Republican Representative Dale Strong and Democratic Representative Tom Suozzi.

The lawmakers recommended that the executive order should mirror the current restrictions on Russian aquatic products, prohibiting related Chinese-origin goods from entering the U.S. market through direct exports, transshipment via third countries, re-packaging, re-labeling, or further processing, and designate the entire supply chain as posing "an unusual and extraordinary challenge" to U.S. national security, foreign policy, and economic interests.
