Zelenskyy urges European leaders to use frozen Russian assets
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy urged European leaders to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine's war efforts in Brussels, the day after the United States announced sanctions against Moscow.
Zelenskyy told reporters during the EU 27 summit, "I hope they can make a political decision to make a positive decision in some way to help Ukraine." The core issue of this EU 27 summit was how to use the frozen assets of the Russian central bank.
AFP said that using frozen Russian assets is unprecedented and not without risks, especially for Belgium, as most of Russia's assets in Europe - about 210 billion euros - are located in Belgium.
Belgium's Prime Minister Bart De Wever threatened on Thursday that he would block the entire process if his conditions were not met.
Regarding this, Ukrainian President wrote on X: "Make a decision to fully use the frozen Russian assets. Anyone who delays this decision will not only limit our defense but also hinder the EU's own process. It's time to take action on Russian assets. I urge you to give full support."
AFP said that the EU 27 countries are expected to continue discussing later on Thursday evening, trying to overcome Belgium's resistance. Even so, the European Commission still needs to submit a formal legal proposal before the next EU summit in December, at which point Belgium will still have a say.
Earlier that day, Zelenskyy and European leaders welcomed the U.S. announcement of sanctions against Moscow.
