Germany Launches Rare Earth Magnet Recycling Plant to Reduce Dependence on China

AFP, Frankfurt, 28th — As Europe seeks to reduce its reliance on China in key industries such as automotive manufacturing and renewable energy, a rare earth magnet recycling production facility in Germany was officially launched today.

The European Union (EU) aims to ensure the recovery of strategic raw materials like rare earths, targeting coverage of 25% of EU demand by 2030.

The new plant, located in Pforzheim, a city in southwestern Germany, is operated by German startup HyProMag and is one of several similar initiatives currently being promoted across Europe.

In a statement, HyProMag said the facility aims to produce 750 metric tons of rare earth magnets annually by 2028 — a significant step toward strengthening Europe’s supply security and sustainability for critical raw materials. Part of the plant’s construction costs are funded by grants from the EU and the German government.

Rare earth magnets are widely used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and consumer electronics. The EU currently requires about 20,000 metric tons annually.

China dominates the global rare earth industry.

HyProMag is a subsidiary of a UK-based company, which previously launched a similar facility in the UK in January this year.
