Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad severely criticized Trump's attempt to curb China's rise, saying that he is 100 years behind the times.

He said: "They (Chinese) are very hardworking and highly skilled, you cannot stop their growth. China will do its best to hold onto the market, and what they are doing is exactly what Europeans have done before."
