Will Trump’s dream battleship be sunk by Democrats?
Following their loss in the midterm elections, Trump faces a growing list of challenges.
On the 4th, the U.S. website "The War Zone" reported that after next year’s congressional transition, the battleship construction plan long favored by Trump could come under scrutiny and potentially be canceled by Democratic lawmakers.
The report noted that Democratic members are expected to assume leadership of the House committee responsible for reviewing U.S. military budgets. Potential candidates, such as Representative Adam Smith from Washington State and Representative Joe Courtney from Connecticut, have previously voiced public opposition to the Trump-class battleship, citing concerns over budget inefficiency and questionable combat utility.
In addition, other ambitious military initiatives proposed by Trump—such as the “Golden Fleet” concept, his push to revert U.S. Navy aircraft carriers from electromagnetic to steam catapults, the “Golden Dome” missile defense program, and his $1.5 trillion defense budget proposal—could also face Democratic review.
In fact, if Democrats proceed with a comprehensive assessment of these military proposals, it would not be surprising.
Whether it is the construction of a Trump-class battleship or the idea of replacing electromagnetic launch systems with steam-based ones, both concepts have long carried an air of impracticality. Yet the U.S. Navy agreed to them without significant resistance—raising questions about whether naval leadership may have anticipated Trump’s electoral defeat and thus accepted these plans with unusual speed.
