According to informed sources, the capacity monitoring systems at gas station storage tanks across multiple U.S. states have been compromised by cyber intrusions, with U.S. officials suspecting Iranian hackers behind the attacks. The sources said the involved hackers exploited internet-connected automatic tank gauging systems that lacked password protection, enabling them to tamper with displayed tank readings in certain cases. No physical damage or actual harm has been discovered so far as a result of these cyber intrusions; however, the vulnerabilities have raised security concerns, as hackers could theoretically gain control over automatic tank gauging systems and prevent timely detection of gas leaks. Nevertheless, sources also noted that due to insufficient evidence left behind by the hackers, the U.S. government may ultimately be unable to conclusively identify the responsible party.
