[By Guancha Observer Network, Pan Yuchen, edited by Gao Shen] According to a May 15 Reuters report, sources familiar with the matter said that after the joint statement of the China-US Geneva economic and trade talks was released, Tesla's US factories plan to import Chinese parts used for producing Cybertruck and Semi models starting from late May.

This indicates that the easing of trade relations between the two largest economies in China and the US after the Geneva talks has had an immediate impact on commercial activities.

However, the source added that due to the unpredictability of the Trump administration, the situation may still change.

Tesla has not yet responded to requests for comment on this news.

Previously, after US President Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, Tesla suspended transportation of parts from China, severely affecting its plans for large-scale production of the Cybertruck and Semi models.

However, in the joint statement of the China-US Geneva economic and trade talks released on May 12, both countries agreed to cancel most tariffs and countermeasures.

According to previous reports, Tesla plans to resume trial production of these two models in October this year and achieve mass production in 2026. The Cybertruck will be produced in Texas, while the Semi will be produced in Nevada.

In October 2024, Tesla officially released its Robotaxi product, the Cybertruck, which is aimed at the mobility market and features a two-seat layout, without pedals or a steering wheel. According to plans, Tesla will start mass production of this model in 2026, priced under $30,000 (approximately RMB 216,000).

Currently, Tesla is seeking approval from the US government to make the Robotaxi product a reality. However, just recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) plans to launch an investigation into Tesla to assess the system's response capabilities in low visibility conditions.

On the other hand, Tesla's Semi electric semi-truck was officially released in 2017. Due to battery supply shortages, the first batch of vehicles was not delivered to customers until December 2022. Currently, Tesla plans to increase production of the Semi in 2026 and accelerate the delivery of overdue orders to customers like PepsiCo.

Although Trump claimed that tariffs were intended to promote the development of American manufacturing, they caused serious harm to the business interests of his political ally, Elon Musk. As CEO of Tesla, Musk has repeatedly expressed support for free trade and opposition to tariffs.

Last April, Musk told analysts during the Q1 2025 earnings call that he was pushing the Trump administration to lower tariffs, but the final decision rested with the US president.

Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja also stated that tariffs harm domestic capital investment in the US, as Tesla has to bring in equipment from outside the US, especially from China, to expand domestic production lines.
