New Media: The high-end hotel industry in China is recovering
Reference Message Network reported on May 15 that according to a May 12 report on the Singapore Strait Times website, China's high-end hotel industry is recovering. With the transformation of the tourism landscape, the number of luxury hotel openings in China has surged. This is the result of multiple factors working together: significant growth in inbound tourism, the rise of the emerging affluent middle class, and the continuous increase in tourists' demand for accommodations that offer authentic and rich experiences.
The report stated that this growth holds unique appeal for Singaporean travelers, with the Singapore market showing renewed enthusiasm for traveling to China.
According to the "2025 Travel Trends Report" released by flight search website Skyscanner, from January to June 2024, the search volume for flights to Lijiang, Yunnan from Singapore increased by 410%. The search volume for Chongqing and Hangzhou also grew by 354% and 101%, respectively. This indicates that both emerging cities and established cities in China are attracting tourists from the Asian region.
Hotel groups are capitalizing on this development momentum.
Data from German market research company Statista shows that in 2024, China received nearly 132 million international tourists, an increase of 61%.
The report noted that domestic travel remains the mainstay of China's tourism recovery. Data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China shows that in 2024, domestic trips in China reached 56.15 billion, an increase of 14.8%, with a total revenue of 5.75 trillion RMB.
The World Travel & Tourism Council predicts that Chinese tourists' domestic travel spending will reach a record $968 billion in 2025.
McKinsey Consulting pointed out that this has a major impact on the hotel industry. A survey on global hotel planning in 2023 found that 41% of under-construction luxury hotel rooms are located in Asia, with 43% in China.
Janet He, head of business at Singapore Banyan Tree Group, said, "In China, as inbound tourism recovers, the market is rebalancing. This requires the hotel industry to cater not only to international tourists but also meet the needs of high-spending domestic guests."
She said, "At the same time, luxury is being redefined, with tourists placing greater emphasis on cultural immersion and unique experiences, no longer prioritizing traditional symbols of status."
The report pointed out that China's rich diversity, with vibrant bustling metropolises as well as serene and picturesque natural landscapes, provides unique conditions for the development of luxury hotels, allowing them to offer guests experiences far beyond comfortable accommodation.
Today, more and more luxury hotels are appearing in rural areas of China, and they are also launching many new distinctive experience activities, making travel more colorful. Guests can participate in health and wellness activities, learn to make traditional handicrafts, or follow tour guides to visit historical and cultural attractions.
Design also plays a crucial role in creating an immersive local atmosphere.
Jeffrey W. Baerloti, president and CEO of Wyndham Hotels Group, said that luxury hotels are increasingly incorporating traditional Chinese elements into their design and services.
Baerloti said, "This approach not only highlights the authenticity of the culture but also allows guests to better experience the profound cultural heritage of China." (Translated by Wang Dongdong)
