Another drone and explosive device discovered near Leipzig Airport
According to sources from law enforcement agencies cited by Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, and Süddeutsche Zeitung, investigators found a third drone and approximately 50 grams of military-grade high explosive RDX in farmland adjacent to the western side of Leipzig Airport on August 14.
Previously, on August 4, a drone carrying explosives was discovered inside the airport premises. The drone was intended to attack a Ukrainian military transport aircraft, but its detonation mechanism failed to activate.
Investigators believe another drone likely collided with a DHL cargo plane that night, as subsequent inspections revealed damage to the aircraft’s tail fin. According to Bild, authorities had suspected from the outset that three drones were involved in the incident.
The investigation is focused on a hybrid attack allegedly orchestrated by foreign intelligence agencies. In the nearby abandoned village of Kulsdorf, equipment suspected of being used to control the drones was also discovered.
The German Federal Criminal Police Office is investigating the case under the lead of the Federal Public Prosecutor, charging it as a potential act of terrorism.
