Media: Trump Envoy Heading to Switzerland for Talks with Iran

Axios, an American news website, reported on June 19, citing a U.S. official, that President Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, is traveling to Switzerland to hold the first round of talks with Iran over a potential nuclear agreement.

The report noted that Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, has already arrived in Switzerland.

Before this visit, the previously scheduled U.S.-Iran negotiations set to begin Friday were initially postponed. It remains unclear when the peace talks between the two sides will actually start.

Earlier reports indicated that the White House spokesperson stated Vice President Vance had canceled his planned early Friday trip to Switzerland to sign a memorandum of understanding with Iran. Meanwhile, the White House expressed hope that technical discussions with Tehran could commence as soon as possible.

On June 18, Vance confirmed he would lead the U.S. negotiating delegation and said the plan was to travel to Switzerland over the weekend, though the departure date of the negotiation team depends on the arrival of representatives from Tehran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry responded regarding the plan to hold a signing ceremony in Switzerland, stating that the memorandum has already been signed by both presidents and no further ceremony is needed. However, it emphasized Iran’s intention to participate in negotiations with the United States.

On June 18, Iran and the United States digitally signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the military conflict that began on February 28. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi stated the memorandum requires the immediate cessation of all military operations across every front, including Israel’s actions in Lebanon.
