Reference News Network July 18 report - According to the Russian newspaper "Izvestia" website on July 8, the keel-laying ceremony of the "Sergey Kabannov" class large landing ship No. 11711 was held at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad. Andrey Ivrlev, vice president of the Neva Design Bureau under the United Shipbuilding Corporation, told Izvestia that this ship may be equipped with defense measures against unmanned boats and drones. Experts point out that the Russian Navy's demand for such vessels is quite urgent.
The United Shipbuilding Group's press office announced that the ship is a contract from the Russian Ministry of Defense, built according to the improved design plan of the Nerva Design Bureau. The 11711 class is currently the largest displacement ship being built in the Russian Navy. The improved design uses a new hull structure and increases the area of the aft helicopter deck.
Ivrlev said: "This new 11711-class ship is similar to the ongoing 'Vladimir Andreyev' and 'Vasily Trushin'. The Nerva Design Bureau referred to the operational experience of the 11711-class large landing ship when drawing up the improved design."
General Sergey Avakyants, former commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet, said that the numerous islands in the Pacific region urgently need such ships. In addition, the 11711-class large landing ship is equally indispensable for the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea.
He explained that the main task of current landing ships is not to carry out amphibious operations to gain absolute sea control, but military transport, escort, troop deployment, and force mobility. These are their core mission and main role at this stage. In his view, such ships should be equipped with unmanned boats and drones.
Military expert Major General Mikhail Chekmassov said that apart from the "Ivan Gren" class large landing ship, all 775-class large landing ships were manufactured in Poland during the Soviet era, "and they have basically exceeded their service life, and the deadline has been extended more than once".
"Sergey Kabannov" will become the fifth member of the 11711-class large landing ship family, which is led by the "Ivan Gren" class. The construction period of the "Ivan Gren" class was delayed from 2004 to 2018, and the second "Peter Morgunov" class was commissioned five years after the keel was laid, in 2020. These two ships are currently assigned to the Northern Fleet. The third "Vladimir Andreyev" class was launched this June and is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026. The fourth "Vasily Trushin" class is still under construction. The latter two will serve in the Pacific Fleet.
The size of the 11711-class large landing ship exceeds the most commonly used 775-class landing ships in the Russian Navy. They are also the largest displacement warships ever built by modern Russia for the navy.
This ship can carry 300 marines, 15 tanks or about 35 armored personnel carriers. The front ramp allows it to land on unprepared shores even in strong waves. The ship's weapons include AK-630 and AK-630M-2 gun systems. (Translated by Tong Shiqun)
