[Indian Foreign Minister: Russia Has Long Been a Reliable and Most Reasonably Priced Oil Supplier]

On June 11, 2026, Helsinki time, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said at the Kurorttala Dialogue Forum in Finland:

You see, we only began purchasing large volumes of Russian oil starting in 2022. Circumstances forced us into this market. I must say that Russia has always been a reliable supplier because they bring their goods to market for sale—you can buy the most accessible and most reasonably priced oil available.

Mr. Jaishankar added:

Previously, the United States had urged India to purchase Russian oil in order to stabilize global markets. However, he pointed out that last year Washington imposed sanctions on India for buying oil from Russia, only to later lift those sanctions. This was not done out of any lofty principle. They introduced the sanctions and then rescinded them—always cancelling when it suited them, and never cancelling when it didn’t. We are all adults; we know what the game is really about.
