From "One-time Strike" to "Chronic Strangulation" — The U.S. New Strategy Toward Iran: Weekly New Sanctions Until Complete Blockade

The United States Plans to Impose New Sanctions Weekly to Pressure Iran

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Reuters that the Biden administration plans to introduce new sanctions each week targeting entities linked to Iran, aiming to further intensify pressure on Tehran.

"You will see more sanctions coming out every week," Bessent said regarding future restrictive measures by the U.S. He elaborated further: "We start with banks, making it clear — holding Iranian funds or assisting the Iranian regime is not allowed."

Bessent revealed that at the upcoming G20 Finance Ministers' Meeting, to be held from August 31 to September 1 in Asheville, North Carolina, he intends to warn all attending representatives: any country or individual maintaining ties with Iran may face the risk of secondary U.S. sanctions.

Previously, Bessent announced on August 24 that Washington has significantly tightened its unilateral sanctions against Iran. He stated that this round of measures aims to "completely cut off all sources of revenue for Tehran." The treasury secretary also warned that the U.S. would impose "secondary sanctions" (i.e., second-tier sanctions) on countries refusing to comply with the new anti-Iran measures, and threatened to strip them of access to the U.S. dollar. When asked why immediate action wasn't taken against Iran's trade partners, Bessent explained that he was striving to avoid direct confrontation, saying, "We have no intention of blowing up the global financial system."
