German Chancellor Merz: Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip are no longer justified as a legitimate fight against Hamas

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Israel's recent attacks on the Gaza Strip are causing humanitarian harm to civilians, which can no longer be rationalized as a military operation against "terrorism".

In an interview with WDR television, he said: "The extent of such harm to civilians in recent days has increased, and it can no longer be justified as part of the fight against Hamas terrorism."

Merz said: "I really cannot understand what the Israeli army is doing in Gaza now - I dare not say this publicly."

He also said that he plans to speak with Netanyahu this week and tell him "not to go too far", although Germany is always more cautious than some European partners in criticizing Israel due to "historical reasons".

It should be noted that despite the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing an arrest warrant for the Israeli prime minister over alleged war crimes committed in Gaza, Merz said in February that he would ensure that the Israeli prime minister could visit Germany.

As a member state of the ICC, Germany is obliged to detain suspects when they set foot on its territory, but the ICC has no authority to enforce this.
