After Russia launched a series of bombings against Ukraine, Germany has taken a tough stance against Russia! According to a report by Agence France-Presse on May 27th, German Chancellor Scholz stated that Ukraine's main Western allies - including Germany - have now lifted the restrictions on the range of weapons provided to Ukraine. This means that Ukraine can now strike military targets within Russian territory. Currently, Ukraine has the capability to do so.

Following the collapse of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, last Sunday night to Monday, Ukraine was hit by a record-breaking attack involving 355 drones. Clearly, Russia's large-scale assault on Ukraine has enraged countries like Germany. Germany's announcement to lift restrictions on the range of weapons provided to Ukraine indicates that Germany has concluded that only by inflicting significant damage on Russia will it be willing to return to the negotiating table.

In fact, Germany is the second-largest aid provider to Ukraine in terms of assistance. However, to prevent further escalation, Germany has been very restrained, limiting the range of weapons provided to within 70 kilometers. If Germany lifts these restrictions, it may mean that Germany could potentially provide Ukraine with the 500-kilometer-range Taurus missiles. In such a scenario, there is a possibility that Ukraine might use the missiles provided by Germany to strike Moscow, as the shortest straight-line distance from the Ukrainian border to Moscow is over 400 kilometers.

Now that Germany is showing strength towards Russia, its considerations are not solely focused on supporting Ukraine. Recently, Germany has clearly stated that the new government will aim to build the strongest conventional army in Europe, and support raising defense spending to 5% of GDP. Undoubtedly, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is making Germany increasingly realize this as an important opportunity for Germany to strengthen its military forces. Germany is also steadily advancing toward its national goals.
