CNN, citing information from Ukrainian intelligence agencies and analysis of maritime and air transport routes, reported that North Korea plans to send a military task force of 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers to support Russia. According to the media, the North Korean troops are expected to arrive in the coming months.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not commented on this information.

The report stated: "According to the assessment of Ukrainian officials, North Korea plans to triple the number of troops fighting for Russia on the Ukraine-Russia front, sending an additional 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers to support Moscow."

Reporters believe that these forces will be used to replenish losses and reinforce the 11,000 North Korean soldiers sent to Russia in November 2024 to support Russia's efforts to liberate the Kursk region.

Ukrainian reports seen by CNN indicate that the Russian Ministry of Defense will provide North Korean soldiers with "necessary equipment, weapons, and ammunition" to "further integrate them into Russian combat units."

On April 26, 2025, General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the Russian General Staff, officially confirmed for the first time the participation of North Korean troops in combat operations on Russian territory when reporting to President Vladimir Putin on the complete liberation of the Kursk region. Subsequently, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un also confirmed this information.

It should be noted that the North Korean military is operating on Russian territory in the Kursk region based on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, particularly Article 4, which stipulates that one party must immediately provide military assistance if the other is subjected to an armed attack.
