Reference News Network, July 14 report - According to the South China Morning Post website on July 11, a maglev train made in China was publicly unveiled in Beijing for the first time, which will be the fastest ground transportation in Chinese history - this ambitious project is expected to greatly reduce travel time and consolidate China's reputation as a leader in the global high-speed rail network.
The train, capable of reaching speeds of 600 km/h, was unveiled this week at the 17th China International Modern Railway Technology Equipment Exhibition, giving people a glimpse into China's future vision for railway transportation.
The train was developed by CRRC, featuring a streamlined and elongated body design with a pointed front that effectively reduces resistance caused by oncoming air when the train is traveling at high speed. Media footage showed a futuristic-style cabin equipped with large screens.
Representatives at the exhibition stated that the first engineering prototype was completed last July. Before the train is put into commercial operation, more line and safety tests and feasibility assessments of the engineering prototypes will be conducted.
This train will be positioned as a "point-to-point transportation" between major cities across provinces, serving as an addition to the existing network.
For example, if a super-high-speed maglev train travels at a maximum speed of 600 km/h, the travel time between Beijing and Shanghai, which are 1,200 km apart, will be reduced from the current 5 hours to 2.5 to 3 hours.
Song Nan, a senior engineer at CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd., said that the train "is expected to fill the speed gap between high-speed rail and aviation within 2,000 km," combining the timeliness and safety of rail transport with the speed experience of air travel.
The advantages of superconducting electric high-speed maglev train technology include faster speed, lower operating noise, and zero emissions.
Due to the non-contact system, friction and mechanical wear are reduced, lowering long-term maintenance costs.
The superconducting electric high-speed maglev operates without contact between the train and the track through the interaction of the superconducting magnets on board and the coils on the track. When the vehicle is running at low speed, it uses rubber wheels for movement.
Song Nan said that this model has full autonomous driving capabilities and requires integration of various technologies such as 5G communication, AI video acquisition, and acoustic sensing, and also deploys various sensors along the route.
Since 2005, China's high-speed rail network has expanded rapidly, becoming the largest high-speed rail network in the world. By the end of 2024, the operating mileage of China's high-speed rail exceeded 48,000 kilometers.
