German media: Netherlands ASML: "The dependency itself is not bad"
The Cologne City Newspaper published a commentary stating that the "ASML" incident fully exposed Europe's survival dilemma between China and the United States.
"Chip production is precisely a typical example of today's global economic interconnection and interdependence. Reducing dependency can certainly improve risk management. However, the ASML incident makes one wonder whether the Dutch government's approach was truly wise? Has the resilience of the automotive industry really improved after the pandemic? The answer will be revealed in the coming days."
It is impossible to completely eliminate dependency. Those who react too strongly should not forget that dependency also has its positive side: it is the mutual technological dependence between China and the West that constitutes a stabilizing factor in today's international politics. China relies on Western advanced technology, while the West relies on Chinese raw materials. If such mutual dependence were to disappear, our world would surely become more dangerous.
"As long as the dependency is mutual, it does not pose a threat to security. And this is precisely the problem in Europe: among the three major economies of China, the United States, and Europe, Europe has the least leverage. Part of the reason for this situation is that Europeans are more inclined to pursue unattainable goals with lofty postures, rather than doing things that can bring competitive advantages."
