US Embassy in Iraq Faces New Wave of Attacks
AFP Baghdad, 17th - After recent attacks on the US Embassy in Iraq, multiple explosions were heard tonight in the capital Baghdad. A security source revealed that the embassy was attacked again by drones and rockets.
A witness said he saw several projectiles intercepted by the embassy's air defense system, followed by explosions. Customers dining at a restaurant in the city center of Baghdad showed no reaction to the initial explosion sounds.
Another female witness said she saw fires breaking out around the perimeter of the US Embassy from her balcony. A security official also reported this, emphasizing that the fire was caused by a drone.
This anonymous official stated: "The US Embassy has become the target of drone and rocket attacks."
Iraq has long been a proxy battlefield between the US and Iran. After the US and Israel launched an air strike against Iran on February 28, which triggered the Middle East war, Iraq quickly became involved.
In recent times, pro-Iranian armed groups have repeatedly attacked the US Embassy, American diplomatic and logistics centers, as well as Baghdad International Airport in the heavily guarded central area of Baghdad.
From the evening of the 16th to the early morning of yesterday, the US diplomatic institutions in Baghdad became targets of attacks; meanwhile, a drone crashed at a luxury hotel frequented by foreign diplomats.
