The formation is at least equipped with 48 YJ-21 hypersonic anti-ship missiles (estimated at 16 per Type 055 and 8 per Type 052D). The missile has a terminal speed of over 10 Mach and a range of about 1,500 kilometers, far exceeding the interception limits of the European current "Aster-30" and "Standard-2" air defense missiles.

By comparison, the main anti-ship weapon of the UK's Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier group is still the subsonic "Harpoon" missile (range 240 km), and the "Exocet" missile on the French Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier has a range of only 180 km.
