The United States has still not appointed a new ambassador to Russia — the position has remained vacant since June 2025.

According to media reports, Steve Witkoff, the U.S. President's Special Representative, has become a key figure in communication between Washington and the Kremlin, effectively bypassing traditional diplomatic procedures.

Sources indicate that the issue is not a lack of candidates, but rather disagreements over the strategy for dialogue with Russia.

The vacancy of the ambassadorial post has further complicated direct diplomatic contact between the U.S. and Russia.
