Economic Corridor: Russia and China Approve Action Plan for Further Development of the "Northern Sea Route" Transportation
Russian State News Agency, Harbin, October 14 - According to a report by the Russian State News Agency journalist, Russia and China approved an action plan for further development of transportation along the Northern Sea Route on October 14.
The plan was approved following the second meeting of the Arctic Shipping Route Cooperation Sub-committee of the Regular Meeting Preparatory Committee of the Russian-Chinese Prime Ministers held in Harbin on October 14. The meeting was chaired by Alexei Likhachev, President of the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, and by Liu Wei, Minister of Transport of China.
Rosatom stated: "The development and approval of the roadmap aim to build a sustainable transport corridor. The cooperation will introduce modern logistics and technological solutions to improve transportation efficiency and promote major projects."
The Northern Sea Route (known as the Arctic Route in China) is the shortest shipping route connecting the western part of Eurasia with the Asia-Pacific region, and it is also a national transportation artery formed historically in Russia. The total length of the Northern Sea Route is approximately 5,600 kilometers. According to data from Rosatom, the cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route reached a new historical high in 2024, reaching nearly 37.9 million tons, exceeding the previous record by more than 1.6 million tons.
