Indian Prime Minister: The visit of the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission will inject momentum into India-EU cooperation
Sputnik News, New Delhi, January 26th - Indian Prime Minister Modi posted on the social network X that the visit of the President of the European Council Costa and the President of the European Commission von der Leyen to India will inject momentum into cooperation between India and Europe in various fields.
The President of the European Council Costa and the President of the European Commission von der Leyen arrived in India on January 25th and attended the military parade commemorating the 77th anniversary of India's independence as guests. On January 27th, EU leaders will co-chair the 16th India-EU Summit, during which both sides are expected to announce the conclusion of free trade agreement negotiations.
India began free trade agreement negotiations with the EU in 2007, but the negotiations stalled in 2013 due to the inability of both sides to reach agreements on key issues such as intellectual property rights, car and alcohol tariffs, and personnel mobility. In May 2021, the two sides resumed the negotiation process.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated during her visit to India in February 2025 that she and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi support the ambitious goal of concluding a free trade agreement by the end of 2025.
