Russian Foreign Ministry: The restrictions on deploying medium and short-range land-based missiles are no longer relevant to Russia

According to China Central Television, on the 4th local time, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that Russia has been making efforts to limit medium and short-range missiles, directly calling on NATO countries to take corresponding measures to restrict the deployment of weapons systems, and calling on the United States' allies in the Asia-Pacific region to support Russia's efforts to avoid regional arms races. However, in fact, the scale of U.S.-made medium and short-range missiles deployed in Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions is expanding.

Based on the above facts, the conditions for Russia to unilaterally limit the deployment of land-based medium and short-range missiles have disappeared, and Russia no longer considers the self-restraint previously passed on the deployment of land-based medium and short-range missiles relevant to itself.

The statement pointed out that, based on a cross-departmental analysis of the scale of land-based medium and short-range missile deployments by the United States and Western countries, and taking into account international security and strategic stability, the Russian leadership will formulate countermeasures.

Medvedev: The best is yet to come

After the Russian Foreign Ministry issued the above statement, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Medvedev posted on social media on the 4th, accusing NATO countries of abandoning their position of suspending the deployment of medium and short-range nuclear missiles, and announcing that Russia would take further response measures.

Medvedev said that the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement on revoking the suspension of deploying medium and short-range missiles was the result of NATO countries' anti-Russia policy.

He also added, "This is a new reality that all our opponents must face. The best is yet to come."

Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia: Russia's redeployment of medium and short-range missiles will be an inevitable outcome

△ Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Ryabkov

Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Ryabkov stated in June this year that Russia's termination of the self-restraint measures on the deployment of medium and short-range missiles would be an inevitable outcome, as Western countries had not paid attention to Moscow's display of restraint.

Ryabkov said that the United States deliberately strengthened the deployment of medium and short-range missiles. "At present, we have not observed any fundamental changes in the U.S. plan to deploy land-based medium and short-range missiles in various regions around the world, let alone a strategic shift. On the contrary, the actual measures taken by the U.S. military in implementing these plans have made us confident that such actions will only continue to escalate."

He added, "The reality is that Russia's restrained attitude after the failure of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty has neither been recognized by the United States and its allies nor received a reciprocal response. Therefore, we have publicly and clearly stated that it is a logical consequence for Russia to terminate the previous unilateral suspension of the deployment of land-based medium and short-range missiles."

The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was signed by U.S. and Soviet leaders in 1987. The treaty stipulated that both countries would not possess, produce or test land-based cruise missiles and ballistic missiles with a range of 500 kilometers to 5,500 kilometers. In February 2019, the United States unilaterally initiated the procedure to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. On August 2, 2019, the United States officially withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, and the U.S. and Russian governments announced that the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty had失效.
