[Former Ukrainian Ambassador to the US: German Delivery of Taurus Missiles is Imperative]

On May 29th, Valeriy Chaly, former Ukrainian Ambassador to the US (2015-2019), told LIGA in an interview that German "Taurus" long-range missiles are not something "needed in the future," but must be delivered immediately. He believes that after the Russian summer offensive ends, Ukraine's military will have an "opportunity window" in the autumn.

Chaly pointed out that "if Germany has not yet made a decision (to provide Taurus missiles), it will be a disaster for Europe to understand the development of the situation." He said that even 100-150 "Taurus" missiles can play a key role after the Russian offensive ends, but a follow-up strategy needs to be jointly formulated with European allies.

Chaly said, "The Russian summer offensive will definitely begin; they always launch their heaviest attacks before being forced to cease fire. As long as weather permits, this offensive will continue until autumn." He expressed confusion about the political maneuvering of Germany's new prime minister regarding military aid, but at the same time believed that keeping military aid to Ukraine confidential was the right decision.

Previously, German Chancellor Scholz hinted at the possibility of providing Taurus missiles to Ukraine, but emphasized that several months of training would be required for the Ukrainian military. Ultimately, the number Germany could provide may only be 50-60, as Germany's own inventory is limited and some missiles require maintenance.
