【By Observer Net, Pan Yuchen / Editor: Gao Xin】On November 5, the Porsche China Research and Development Center was officially launched. Located in the Hongqiao Business District of Shanghai, the center covers an area of 10,000 square meters, making it the first large-scale overseas R&D base for Porsche outside of Weissach, Germany, as well as a strategic upgrade of Porsche's R&D capabilities in China.

According to reports, Porsche has been building its R&D infrastructure in China for over 30 years. In 2014, it established the Porsche Engineering Shanghai Office, and in 2022, expanded to a Beijing branch. In 2019, Porsche China established a digital department, which was later independent as a digital technology company in early 2021. In 2022, the Porsche R&D China branch began operations, further strengthening its focus on local consumer trends.

The newly launched Porsche China Research and Development Center will integrate existing R&D resources such as the Porsche China Technology Department, Porsche Engineering, and Porsche Digital Technology into a comprehensive entity with higher autonomy. The center features professional prototyping workshops and human-machine interaction laboratories, aiming to attract top Chinese engineering and digital talent. It currently has a core team of over 300 engineers. By integrating R&D, procurement, and quality functions, the center can respond more quickly to the needs of Chinese consumers.

"Porsche considers the China Research and Development Center as a strategic pillar, connecting German engineering strength with China's digital future, helping us learn widely, act faster, and strengthen Porsche's global R&D capabilities," said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Management Board of Volkswagen Group and Chairman of the Porsche Global Executive Board, at the opening ceremony. China is leading the way in future mobility, covering multiple dimensions such as electrification, digitization, and new luxury concepts. To address this profound transformation, it is impossible to accurately grasp local trends from a distance; we must be rooted here."

"The official operation of the Porsche China Research and Development Center marks a substantial deepening of our commitment to the Chinese market," said Alexander Pollich, President and CEO of Porsche China. Porsche is committed to creating intelligent solutions that are deeply aligned with the digital lifestyles and unique needs of Chinese users, while ensuring that every product maintains the authentic Porsche driving experience and adheres to the brand's consistent engineering quality and reliability standards."

"The Porsche China Research and Development Center is rooted in years of innovation in China and fully leverages the advantages of China's rapidly developing tech ecosystem, becoming an important complement to the Weissach Research and Development Center," said Michael Steiner, Vice Chairman and Member of the Porsche Global Executive Board, responsible for R&D. Porsche is committed to combining its engineering heritage with China's digital strengths to provide consumers with "truly unique" sports cars.

Currently, the Porsche China Research and Development Center mainly focuses on developing infotainment systems and driver assistance solutions for the Chinese market. Sajjad Khan, a member of the Porsche Global Executive Board responsible for vehicle information technology, stated that through the China Research and Development Center, Porsche can directly integrate into China's rapidly developing innovation ecosystem, shortening the R&D cycle from several years to several months, thus responding more quickly and precisely to the changing needs of Chinese customers.

A new generation of China-specific infotainment system is planned to be equipped in multiple Porsche models starting in mid-2026. According to Li Nan, Vice President of the Porsche China Technology Department, the new generation of China-specific infotainment system features a new interactive design, introducing for the first time an AI voice assistant based on large language models and 3D vehicle display functions, and is deeply integrated with China's mainstream digital ecosystem. Additionally, as the head of the Porsche China Research and Development Center, Li Nan will report directly to Sajjad Khan, making the decision-making process for local R&D more efficient.
