Nintendo of Japan Fined 35 Million Euros by France for Concealing Console Malfunction
According to Kyodo News on June 9: On the 8th, France's consumer protection agency announced that Nintendo's European subsidiary has been fined 35 million euros (approximately 6.5 billion yen) due to joystick malfunctions in the Nintendo Switch home console. It is reported that Nintendo has paid this fine.
The penalty stems from defects in the first-generation Switch joysticks launched in 2017. Some players experienced a "drift phenomenon," where the cursor moves on its own against the player’s intent.
French authorities determined that Nintendo was aware of the issue but concealed it and delayed disclosure, "failing to provide fair information to consumers."
Nintendo Europe announced in 2023 that it would offer free repairs for these defective joysticks.
