Phoenix Technology News, April 28th, according to an article published by Nikkei Asia over the weekend, the rapid development of China's electric vehicle market is driving the fast evolution of technical standards, making it difficult for Japanese carmakers to go it alone and compete solely on their own strength. As a result, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda have begun cooperating with Chinese tech companies to design more intelligent electric vehicles.
Tokyo Motors has designed its first electric sedan, the Platinum 7, specifically for the Chinese market. This is the first model by Toyota equipped with Huawei HarmonyOS. HarmonyOS has been adopted by other automakers for their smart cabin systems, enabling functions such as window, air conditioning, and seat position control via touch screens. Nissan and Honda are also collaborating with Momenta, a Chinese intelligent driving company, to equip their new N7 and Ye electric vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems. The N7 and Ye models are specifically designed for the Chinese market.
"To launch cars that people want here in China, our development needs the wisdom and talent of Chinese people," said Li Hui, General Manager of Toyota China, at the Shanghai Auto Show.
Nikkei Asia pointed out that these three Japanese automakers began cooperating with Chinese companies in the 2000s to initiate comprehensive production in China. Their total sales in China reached a record 4.88 million units in 2020. However, they lagged behind in the electric vehicle sector. With the growing demand for new energy vehicles in the Chinese market, they face challenges. By 2024, the combined total sales of these three Japanese automakers in China had fallen by about 30% compared to their peak.
"A new 'automotive culture' is emerging here (in China), so we need to learn from local talents and partners," a senior executive of Toyota once stated at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show.
As electric vehicles gain popularity in China, the focus of competition has shifted to on-board technologies such as autonomous driving and smart cabins. Companies like BYD and other Chinese enterprises are accelerating the development of new technologies, while new products launched by Japanese automakers for the Chinese market may quickly become outdated.
However, the technical expertise gained in China will help Japanese automakers better compete in other markets. According to Li Hui, General Manager of Toyota China, CEO Koji Sato of Toyota mentioned that Toyota will leverage the products and technologies developed in this cutting-edge Chinese market to drive global business growth.
