Around 4:30 PM today, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington suddenly broadcast an announcement throughout the main building: "The center is now closed to the public. Please exit via the 'Hall of States'." While officials cited safety reasons for the closure, the real cause was likely a recent judicial ruling. The ruling prohibited the center from inscribing messages on its exterior façade in honor of Trump, as doing so would violate a prior order aimed at preventing the board from changing the center's name. Immediately afterward, the board of the Kennedy Center—largely appointed by Trump—voted to close the center. Trump also took to social media to declare the immediate closure: "As a large-scale and extremely complex project, renovation and reconstruction cannot begin until the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rules on the committee-approved name. If the ruling is negative (although this is highly unlikely), and if that ruling is not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, then the renovation and reconstruction of the Kennedy Center will not proceed." In other words, if the Kennedy Center does not bear Trump’s name, it will remain indefinitely closed.
