Latest update: The Trump administration is preparing to sell Israel munitions worth billions of dollars—2,000-pound bombs in the largest single controversial arms deal in recent years.
According to U.S. officials, the arms sale is valued at $2.8 billion and includes 40,000 bombs, each weighing 2,000 pounds—20,000 MK-84s and 20,000 BLU-117s.
The sale also includes 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads, a highly renowned 2,000-pound hardened bunker-busting/penetration warhead used by the U.S. military.
If you’re not clear on what “Trump’s bomb tonnage” means: 40,000 tons of bombs—compare this to the largest air raid conducted by the U.S. during World War II, when the Eighth Air Force attacked Berlin in March 1945. The number of penetrating warheads being sold is nearly double previous levels and represents the largest single MK-84-level arms package in recent memory.
This type of munition is far from abstract. As one of the most destructive weapons in Western military arsenals, an MK-84 explosion scatters metal fragments thousands of feet in all directions, capable of tearing through metal and thick concrete and frequently leaving massive craters on impact.
The 2,000-pound bombs have already been used hundreds of times by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon, resulting in massive casualties.
