German media: Long way to go for US and Russia to rebuild trust
Trump has achieved some results in promoting a broad reconciliation with Moscow, but overall progress has been limited.
On Thursday, Russia released Ksenia Kalernaya, a ballet dancer with dual US-Russia citizenship, in exchange for Arthur Petrov, who was suspected of technical smuggling – this is the second prisoner swap between the two countries in less than two months.
Kalernaya was arrested in January when she returned to Russia to visit relatives. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison for allegedly committing "treason" by donating an amount equivalent to about $50 to a charity supporting Ukraine.
Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, said on Friday that future discussions on prisoner exchanges will continue.
Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, stated that such swaps help rebuild trust between the two countries – mutual trust had been severely damaged during the presidency of former President Biden.
"This indeed helps build trust – something urgently needed now, but ultimately restoring trust will take a long time," Lavrov told reporters.
