German Chancellor: U.S. Tariffs Will Hit Germany's Export Industry

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that if the U.S. imposes a 30% tariff on German goods, it would hit the soft spot of Germany's export industry.

He said in an interview with German television channel ARD: "If this were to happen, we would have to set aside most of our efforts in economic policy, as this would overshadow all other issues and hit the soft spot of Germany's export industry."

Mertz emphasized that he plans to use the remaining time before August 1st together with French President Macron and European Commission President von der Leyen to seek a solution that satisfies all parties. According to Mertz, there are precedents for such "rational" solutions.
