Russian Host's Insults Against Meloni Spark Diplomatic Row, Italy Summons Russian Ambassador

On April 21, Russian Ambassador Paromov was summoned to Italy's Foreign Ministry due to the offensive remarks made by prominent state media host Solovyev toward Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Earlier that day, Solovyev launched a series of intense personal attacks on Meloni in Italian during his program "Full Engagement," then switched to Russian to add a political characterization. He called Meloni a "- complete idiot," "prostitute," "shame of humanity," "fascist beast," and "ugly woman."

Giorgia Meloni responded to Solovyev's attack:

"In essence, fanatical regime propagandists are incapable of coherent logic or freedom of speech. But these caricatures will never divert us from our set course. Unlike others, we have no hidden puppet masters, no overlords, and do not take orders.

Our sole guide is the interest of Italy. We will continue proudly along this path, leaving those who spread rumors both angry and powerless."

Solovyev's remarks clearly exceeded the bounds of normal political debate, constituting derogatory personal attacks and using personal rhetoric to vent frustration over Meloni’s pro-Ukraine stance. Meloni’s response was restrained yet unequivocally principled: she neither allowed herself to be swayed by inflammatory language nor escalated the verbal conflict. Instead, she directed criticism toward "extreme propaganda" while emphasizing Italy’s diplomatic independence and commitment to national interests—effectively safeguarding her country’s image.
