U.S. media: The fate of Japan's second private lunar lander becomes a mystery after landing
US media: The fate of Japan's second private lunar lander is unknown after landing!
The company's first launch also ended in "loss of contact".
An article published on Space News on June 6.
Japan's resilient spacecraft performed a soft landing in the cold sea area of the Moon at 4:17 AM Japanese time on June 6.
However, the telemetry data from the lander stopped transmitting about 1 minute and 45 seconds before the scheduled landing time, raising doubts about the fate of "resilience".
The US media said that this reminded people of ispace's first attempt at a lunar landing in April 2023. In that attempt, the spacecraft also lost contact and was eventually declared a failure.
It is currently unclear whether the landing was successful or not.
Ispace ended its live broadcast on its official website 20 minutes after the original landing time, stating that the task team was still analyzing the data.
The US media pointed out: Today's landing attempt is part of a private lunar exploration wave that began in 2019 with Israel's Beresheet lander mission. Beresheet failed during its landing attempt, just like ispace's first mission two years ago.
The US media said: "Resilience" and its payload are expected to run for about two weeks. "Resilience" is also powered by solar energy, and when the sun disappears below the horizon of the Forsith crater, "Resilience" will lose power.
However, it is currently unclear whether these will become a reality; we can only wait for ispace's update to learn about the fate of "resilience".
The US media also said: But regardless of what happens today - success or failure - ispace is quite "resilient":
They plan to launch another lunar mission in 2026, which will include a more powerful lander named Apex 1.0.
