South Korea's per capita GNI was $36,745 in 2024... surpassing Japan for the second consecutive year.
Statistics show that South Korea's per capita Gross National Income (GNI) in 2024 exceeded Japan's, marking the second consecutive year it surpassed Japan. After first surpassing Japan in 2023, this trend continued in 2024.
National Total Income is the sum of income earned domestically and internationally by nationals, and dividing this value by the total population gives the per capita GNI, which is one of the commonly used data points for comparing national living standards internationally.
On May 5th, according to data from the Bank of Korea, South Korea's per capita GNI in 2024 was $36,745 (provisional value, approximately 50,120 million Korean won). On a dollar basis, it increased by 1.5% year-on-year, and on a won basis, it increased by 6.1% year-on-year. Additionally, South Korea's per capita GNI has shown an upward trend for three consecutive years since 2022.
Japan's per capita GNI in 2024 was $35,933, which was $812 less than South Korea's. In 2023, South Korea's per capita GNI was $36,195 (final value), which was $402 higher than Japan's ($35,793), further widening the gap between the two countries. Among nations with populations over 50 million, South Korea ranked sixth after the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy.
In 1992, Japan's per capita GNI broke through $30,000, and three years later in 1995, it once again surpassed the $40,000 mark, being the first globally. In 1995, Japan's per capita GNI was $44,568, which was more than $32,000 higher than South Korea's ($12,435).
Japan's per capita GNI once exceeded $50,000 but fell to around $35,000 due to long-term economic stagnation. During this period, South Korea's per capita GNI grew threefold from over $10,000, creating a stark contrast between the two countries.
