von der Leyen: The decision of Europe to reduce the share of nuclear power is a strategic mistake

The war in the Middle East once caused oil prices to surge. EU Commission President von der Leyen said at the Second Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris that Europe's previous decision to reduce the share of nuclear power was a strategic mistake.

The Second Nuclear Energy Summit was held in Paris on March 10. At the summit, von der Leyen stated that in the 1990s, one-third of the electricity production in the EU relied on nuclear power, but now this proportion has dropped to 15%. She said that reducing the share of nuclear power is an option, but given that the EU does not produce oil or natural gas, reducing the share of nuclear power in the EU energy structure and abandoning this reliable, economical, and low-emission energy source is a strategic mistake.

Von der Leyen further emphasized that the EU hopes to promote the development of small nuclear reactors to reduce Europe's reliance on imported fossil fuels. She also announced that the EU will provide 200 million euros in guarantees to promote the R&D of small nuclear reactors. Von der Leyen clearly stated that this funding will come from the EU Emissions Trading System, "we hope this new technology will be operational in the early 2030s."

Von der Leyen also said, "We are witnessing the revival of nuclear power around the world. Europe also wants to participate in it."
