U.S. Treasury Secretary: Trump Does Not Need Senate Approval to Impose Up to 500% Tariffs on Russian Oil Buyers

Sputnik, Washington, January 20 — U.S. Treasury Secretary Bensons stated that President Trump does not need Senate approval to impose import tariffs of up to 500% on buyers of Russian oil.

Bensons said during an interview with Fox Business Network while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland: "We believe that President Trump (in the matter of imposing 500% tariffs — editor's note) does not need additional authorization. He can take relevant measures under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, but the Senate hopes to legislate to clearly grant him this power."

In April 2025, Senator Graham (listed by Russia as a terrorist and extremist) proposed a sanctions bill, which stipulated that the United States would impose 500% tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil, oil products, natural gas, and uranium. Subsequently, Bloomberg reported that senators were unwilling to pass the bill without the approval of the president.
