Iraqi Prime Minister: Militia Disarmament is Linked to the Withdrawal of the US-led Coalition

Sputnik News, Moscow, November 04 - Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani stated that as long as the US-led coalition remains stationed in Iraq, the country cannot achieve a monopoly on weapons.

According to the Prime Minister, some pro-government militias view the coalition as an occupying force.

The Prime Minister stated that there is no longer "Islamic State" (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) within Iraq, and there are no factors hindering the coalition's withdrawal.

He told Reuters:

"At that time (after the withdrawal), we will undoubtedly have a clear plan to stop supplying weapons beyond government institutions."

He added that forces loyal to the government can join official security forces or lay down their arms and engage in politics.

In 2014, the United States initiated the formation of an international counter-terrorism coalition to combat the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS, banned in Russia), and launched the "Operation Inherent Resolve" in August of that year, targeting jihadists in Iraq and later in Syria. This so-called international coalition includes more than 60 countries. The coalition's operations were carried out without direct authorization from the UN Security Council.
