BYD (Japan) Sets New Sales Record in August

According to Japanese automotive media outlet Response, on September 3, BYD Auto Japan announced that monthly orders for August 2026 reached 1,260 units across its six currently available models, setting a new all-time high.

The primary driver behind this sales surge is the compact electric vehicle "Hai La." Despite an average of only 16 operating days per dealership in August—due to holidays including Obon Festival—the cumulative order volume had already reached approximately 1,500 units by the end of the month. Foot traffic at authorized dealerships nationwide also hit an all-time high, with a surge in test drives and inquiries.

Many visiting Japanese customers remarked: “I didn’t even know this model existed,” and “I was surprised by its driving performance, features, and price.” This shift in perception is now spreading across all BYD models.

The top-tier “300 Premium” version accounts for about 80% of total orders for the Hai La model, maintaining strong popularity. In August, 81 units were registered, primarily the entry-level “200” variant. For the “300 Premium,” which makes up roughly 80% of orders, deliveries are set to begin from mid-September onward, gradually rolling out to authorized dealerships nationwide, with customer delivery plans commencing accordingly.

Based on a survey conducted by BYD Auto (Japan) among buyers, the five main reasons influencing purchase decisions are as follows:

1. First-hand experience with the product (perception changed after test drive)

2. Features surpassing the vehicle’s price point (high roof + dual electric doors; even more advanced in the 300 Premium trim)

3. High safety standards (robust body structure, advanced driver-assistance systems, etc.)

4. Long-term warranty on drive battery and high-voltage components. Sufficient range (210 km WLTC cycle; 320 km for 300 Plus and 300 Premium versions, both based on WLTC mode and rated by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism)

Mr. Tohokuji, President of BYD (Japan), stated: “Orders are averaging around 20 units per dealership per month, with approximately 80% of customers being first-time buyers, indicating a strong start and sustained sales momentum. We will work closely with authorized dealerships nationwide to boost sales and prepare for the full-scale delivery of the Hai La 300 Premium starting at the end of September.”
