Trump calls Britain stupid
On local time on the 20th, US President Trump posted on the social platform "Truth Social" that the UK's decision to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago back to Mauritius was "absolutely stupid," and he used this incident to argue that the US's intention to annex Greenland is a wise move.
In his post, Trump said, "It is shocking that our 'wise' NATO ally, Britain, is currently planning to hand over Diego Garcia Island (the main island of the Chagos Archipelago, where a US military base is located) to Mauritius without any reason." He wrote, "It is an extremely foolish act for Britain to give up such an important territory, which is one of the reasons why the US must acquire Greenland for national security considerations. Denmark and European allies must do the right thing."
The Guardian reported that Trump's latest statement would cause great embarrassment to British Prime Minister Starmer. Starmer has recently been trying to appease Trump in order to achieve favorable trade terms and have Washington on his side.
Last May, Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced that the UK had signed an agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius, which was the result of a 60-year struggle by Mauritius. The agreement marked the end of the decolonization process since Mauritius gained independence in 1968. Ramgoolam also emphasized that Mauritius must gain sovereignty over the entire Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia Island.
The Chagos Archipelago is located in the Indian Ocean. In 1965, Mauritius was forced to cede the Chagos Archipelago to British colonial authorities. The next year, the UK leased the main island, Diego Garcia, to the US to establish an airbase and expelled about 2,000 residents.
