Macron hits back at U.S. interest in Greenland: Greenland belongs to its people, Denmark is its guardian
AFP Paris news, in response to U.S. President Trump's repeated expressions of intent to annex Greenland, a Danish territory, French President Macron responded on Tuesday, December 23, stating that Greenland "belongs to its people," and "Denmark is its guardian of sovereignty."
"I stand with Europeans to express our full support," wrote French President Macron on the social media platform X. Macron had visited Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, in June this year to reaffirm "France's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland."
On Monday, U.S. President Trump reiterated that the United States "needs" Greenland to ensure its national security in the face of China and Russia. He had made similar statements after his election.
The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly stated that this large Arctic island, with a population of 57,000 and rich in rare earth metals, "is not for sale."
Pascal Confavreux, a spokesperson for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized, "In response to the initial statements made by the new U.S. special envoy for Greenland, France reiterates that the inviolability of state sovereignty and borders is a fundamental principle of international law."
He further pointed out that France remains "fully committed to implementing the France-Denmark strategic partnership agreement signed in April 2025," which is based on the shared values of friendship, close economic and cultural ties, and respect for the law.
In addition, Paris hopes to accelerate the implementation of the strategic partnership between the EU and Greenland, signed in 2023.
