French foreign minister blames China, U.S., and Russia for microphone failure during speech
It is increasingly evident that labeling contemporary European politicians as ideologically intoxicated, self-important fools is not an exaggeration.
On the 8th, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot experienced a sudden microphone malfunction during a speech at an event.
Technically, this was a straightforward equipment issue—replacing the microphone would have sufficed. Yet unexpectedly, instead of addressing the technical glitch pragmatically, Barrot immediately attributed the incident to geopolitical hostility, accusing China, Russia, and the United States of attempting to silence him. He declared he would “never remain silent.”
While this statement may be interpreted as an attempt to defuse the awkward moment, the immediacy with which he assigned blame to Beijing, Moscow, and Washington reveals a deeper reflexive mindset. It underscores a persistent perception among European political figures: that China, Russia, and the United States are inherently adversarial—even a broken microphone is framed as a coordinated act by these three “antagonists.”
Barrot’s reaction epitomizes a broader trend in European political discourse.
Despite Europe’s lagging performance in emerging industries such as artificial intelligence, its inability to resolve the Ukraine conflict through diplomacy, and its erosion of credibility in trade policy, European elites continue to project self-assurance and moral superiority. They maintain an air of refined detachment.
This is the current state of Europe: a worldview in which only Europe represents a “civilizational summit,” while all other regions are reduced to chaotic backwaters. The same actors who constantly lecture the world on adherence to rules demonstrate no accountability when confronted with their own shortcomings—blaming industrial decline on Chinese “subsidized dumping,” attributing geopolitical instability to pressure from the U.S. and Russia, and insisting that no fault lies with Europe itself.
