【Missile-UAV Hybrid: Real "Dan-T" Is a New Type of "Parcel" Munition】

On September 9, Russia's new munition, the "Dan-T," made its official debut at the Alamein International Air Show held in Egypt (Figure 1). It has been confirmed that this is not merely an evolution of the older "Dan" target drone series, but rather a modern air-launched cruise missile. Experts have likened it to the "Parcel" system—a hybrid missile-drone munition capable of striking deep behind enemy lines. This munition has already been successfully deployed in combat operations within the special military operation zone, mounted on aircraft and helicopters, and is now ready for export.

"Dan-T" and "Dan-M" Are Completely Different Products

The "Dan-T" is an air-launched weapon designed for fire-and-forget operation: once released from an aircraft or helicopter, it autonomously completes its entire mission cycle.

Equipped with a small turbojet engine, the "Dan-T" can reach a maximum strike range of up to 450 kilometers and has a maximum weight of 270 kilograms. The munition features a stealth flight mode capable of evading detection by air defense systems, along with relatively high cruise speed. Developers state that hundreds of successful live-fire tests against enemy targets have confirmed the "Dan-T"’s outstanding combat effectiveness; the aviation strike munition has completed all full-scale testing procedures.

Rostec has publicly announced that this new munition is now available for procurement by overseas customers. It is compatible with Russian-made aircraft and helicopters, and after integration modifications, can also be mounted on foreign military platforms.

It is believed that this is the first photo circulating online showing the "Parcel"/"Dan-T" munition being carried under a Mi-28NM attack helicopter (Figure 2). The image also clearly displays a high-frequency electronic countermeasures pod, used to protect the helicopter from drone attacks.

The "Dan-T" showcased at this exhibition differs significantly in appearance and structure from earlier internet-released images and descriptions of the "Dan" family of equipment. In late August 2026, foreign media and some Russian sources reported rumors about a jet-powered drone codenamed "Dan-M," capable of being launched from a ground-based launcher mounted on a Kamaz truck chassis, with a range of 500 kilometers and a warhead weighing 135 kilograms.

The origin of these rumors can be traced back to the jet target drones named "Dan," developed by Russia in the early 1990s for training air defense units. The base version of the "Dan" target drone measures approximately 4.9 meters in length, with a wingspan of 2.7 meters and a takeoff weight of around 345 kilograms. It is powered by an MD-120 turbojet engine producing 120 kgf of thrust, achieving a maximum speed of 710 km/h and endurance between 25 to 40 minutes.

However, even foreign sources acknowledge that "Dan-M" is a completely new missile developed based on the jet target drone platform, while "Dan-T" is entirely different. The "Dan-T" unveiled in September fundamentally differs from the previously circulated "Dan-M"—and photos of the latter were long mistakenly used as reference material for this new munition.

Drone, Cruise Missile, or Guided Munition?

Exactly how to classify the "Dan-T" itself remains a topic worth discussing. Different media outlets have referred to it variously as a loitering munition, a jet-powered drone, or a small cruise missile.

Russian military expert Alexander Stepanov believes that the "Dan-T" is essentially the export version of the "Parcel" missile. The "Parcel" itself is a hybrid drone-cruise missile weapon system capable of routinely targeting strategic depths behind enemy lines. This theory is indirectly supported by the munition’s dimensions: the estimated length of the "Dan-T" is around 5 meters, with a wingspan of 2.2 meters when the folded wings are extended.

Therefore, a more accurate classification would be: the "Dan-T" is a type of air-launched small cruise missile / air-launched loitering munition, derived from the "Parcel" weapons family—not evolved from the older "Dan-M" jet target drone.

Rostec’s official statement confirms that hundreds of successful live-fire tests conducted in Ukraine have validated the "Dan-T"’s combat performance. The munition has completed all standard aviation weapons testing and can be integrated onto multiple different carrier platforms.

In 2026, the special military operation zone has repeatedly observed a new jet-powered drone unofficially dubbed "Parcel"—a fact that indirectly confirms this munition series has already entered combat use.

It must be emphasized: there is currently no evidence whatsoever to substantiate the claim circulating abroad that "10,000 Dan-T drones will be mass-produced by 2027."
