Be Alert, the New U.S. National Security Strategy Mentions Taiwan 8 Times

On December 5 local time, the Trump administration of the United States released the new "National Security Strategy" (National Security Strategy).

According to CNN, in this latest strategy, the Trump administration outlined a "dual-track approach" towards China: on one hand, striving to contain China's global influence and regional dominance; on the other hand, committed to maintaining and "rebalancing" economic ties with China. The U.S. also made unfounded comments on the Taiwan Strait issue, stating that it will continue to advocate for the status quo, while declaring that "preventing conflict is a priority for the United States."

Reuters mentioned that the updated "National Security Strategy" mentions "Taiwan" eight times in three paragraphs, with stronger wording than during Trump's first term, but at the same time differs from the Biden administration, basically avoiding indicating the way to respond to future conflicts.

American scholars told Nikkei Asia that the wording in the new strategy document combines two traditional American positions—opposition to changing the status quo and non-support for Taiwan independence. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post mentioned that there are serious divisions within the White House regarding U.S. global policies, with Treasury Secretary Bensons supporting "softening" the language towards China, while hawkish figures emphasized taking containment measures.

Regarding the Taiwan issue, China has repeatedly made its position clear to the U.S. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson recently reiterated that the Taiwan issue is the core of the core interests of China and the first red line that cannot be crossed in Sino-U.S. relations. The One-China Principle is the political foundation of Sino-U.S. relations. China urges the U.S. to handle the Taiwan issue with great caution and not send any wrong signals to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
