The People's Bank of China website reported that on December 8, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Shanghai Center officially opened for business. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Governor of the People's Bank of China Pan Gongsheng, and Mayor of Shanghai Gong Zheng attended the opening ceremony. Deputy Governor of the People's Bank of China Xuan Changneng participated in related activities.

The Shanghai Center is one of the regional centers established by the IMF around the world. It aims to strengthen communication and cooperation between the IMF and economies in the Asia-Pacific region, conduct research on areas of concern for emerging markets and middle-income countries, provide targeted capacity-building support to economies in the region, and maintain global and regional financial stability.
Pan Gongsheng pointed out that President Xi Jinping proposed a global governance initiative in September this year, calling for gathering unity, practicing multilateralism, focusing on action-oriented approaches, and promoting the construction of a more just and reasonable global governance system. The opening and operation of the IMF Shanghai Center fully reflect China's firm position in advocating win-win cooperation with the IMF. It holds significant importance for deepening the cooperation between the IMF and China, promoting macroeconomic policy exchanges and coordination among countries in the Asia-Pacific region, maintaining global and regional financial stability, and improving global financial governance. The People's Bank of China will continue to work with Shanghai City and the IMF to fully support the construction and development of the Shanghai Center.

Georgieva extended her congratulations on the official opening of the Shanghai Center, stating that the Shanghai Center will serve as an important hub to promote research on policy areas in emerging markets and middle-income countries, and deepen dialogue and exchange between the IMF and member states in the region, regional institutions, and other stakeholders.

Gong Zheng extended his congratulations on the official opening of the Shanghai Center, expressing hope that the center will support the construction of Shanghai as an international financial center through positive measures such as policy research, capacity building, and promoting cooperation and exchanges, and provide greater support for expanding high-level financial openness. Shanghai will continue to create favorable conditions and provide convenience for the efficient operation of the IMF Shanghai Center.
