Trump administration proposes to cut NASA's budget by $6 billion
The budget request from Trump would reduce NASA's funding by more than $6 billion compared to the amount the agency is projected to receive in 2025. The proposed $18.8 billion budget includes cuts across NASA's entire portfolio of projects, but the biggest changes are to the agency's science programs, which would see a reduction of nearly $2.3 billion.
The budget proposal for next year requests significant cuts to numerous NASA projects, including phasing out the agency's Moon rocket manufactured by Boeing, reducing personnel and operational spending on the International Space Station, and significantly cutting scientific programs.
In the budget proposal, the White House calls for NASA to phase out the "extremely costly and significantly delayed" Space Launch System (SLS) rocket manufactured by Boeing and the Orion crew capsule manufactured by Lockheed Martin, planning to discontinue their use after only three flights. This budget also includes replacing these vehicles with "more cost-effective commercial systems" for sending humans to the Moon.
