Foreign Media: China Develops "Counter-Rotating Ramjet Engine," Capable of Accelerating from Zero to 6 Times the Speed of Sound
China is developing a revolutionary air-breathing engine for next-generation fighters and hypersonic missiles — the "counter-rotating ramjet engine." This engine design enables continuous operation starting from a standstill up to speeds exceeding six times the speed of sound, and has the potential to replace the currently prevalent turbo-ramjet hybrid propulsion systems used in high-speed flight. Existing hypersonic flight schemes typically require two separate propulsion systems: turbo engines for speeds below Mach 3, and ramjets for higher velocities. In contrast, this new engine integrates both functions into a single system.
After over 30 years of research and development, prototype models of the engine have been successfully manufactured and experimentally validated, marking a significant step toward engineering application. The next phase will involve integrating the engine with various flight platforms and conducting actual flight tests.
