US Policy Uncertainty Rises, Chinese Students Shift Their Study-Abroad Gaze Elsewhere
According to a report on the Reference News website on June 3, citing a June 1 report from the South China Morning Post website, the US government has recently taken further measures to restrict Chinese students from receiving education in the United States, causing concerns to spread among Chinese families. Many are now reconsidering their children's future overseas study destinations.
The report stated that for some people, the American dream is beginning to give way to more practical choices, including closer locations or other Western countries. The unpredictable approach of the US toward international students has prompted them to think about the return on investment for their children's overseas education.
It was reported that these developments are changing parents' decisions to send their children to the US for higher education. Shanghai mom Huang Qiuping (name transliteration) said her son is in the 11th grade at an international high school. He dreams of studying journalism at Northwestern University in Illinois next year, but the family's determination is starting to waver.
"I've always had issues with Trump and his crazy actions," Huang Qiuping said. "University costs $100,000 a year, and I'm questioning if this is a good investment." "Will it be hard to find a job after graduation? Even if he gets an acceptance letter, can he stay legally? All these questions are making us consider Canada as another option."
Her son also considers Canada a more practical choice.
Another Shanghai parent, Mike Yu (name transliteration), said his daughter originally planned to study in the US for undergraduate studies but has now decided to go to Japan instead. "The risk of going to the US is too high now," he said. Although his daughter needs to spend an extra year learning Japanese, Japan is less expensive, closer to China, and offers better employment prospects after graduation.
The report stated that as an important center for international schools in China, Shanghai is witnessing a change in the mindset of affluent families. Ben Wang (name transliteration), who works as a sales manager at a large study abroad service agency, said many parents are turning to Commonwealth countries like the UK and Canada.
He said, "In recent years, most newly established international schools in Shanghai have focused on courses aligned with the UK education system because of the instability of US policies, high costs, and risks." He added that although some families still believe in the US education system, they belong to an increasingly smaller minority. (Translated by Zhao Feifei)
