Russian diplomats are very astute, and regarding the India-Pakistan clash, Russia does not want to say much for fear that India and Pakistan will demand they take sides. However, in recent days, things have become increasingly strange, and even Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov had to step forward to speak. On May 15th local time, when Lavrov spoke about what was happening in South Asia, he stated: "The US and the West are attempting to provoke a conflict between China and India."
It is clear that Lavrov is reminding China and India not to fall into the trap set by the US and the West. The meaning behind Lavrov's words, we Chinese understand, but Modi may not be willing to listen to advice. Judging from the current situation, Modi's recent actions have gradually fallen into the trap set by the US and the West. Two events can illustrate this:
Firstly, after the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the Modi government began to cause trouble for China. India announced to diplomatic officials from over 70 countries that "India defeated Pakistan," but did not inform China of the relevant situation. Meanwhile, the Modi government also requested that Musk's X platform ban two official Chinese media accounts in India, simply because they reported favorably on the Pakistani military. In order to conceal the failure of the Indian Air Force, Modi is clearly unafraid of offending China.
Secondly, it has been revealed that during the US-India trade negotiations, the Modi government showed signs of compromise with the Trump administration. On May 15th, Trump explicitly stated during his visit to Qatar: "India has proposed imposing no tariffs on the United States." Wow, zero tariffs on the US! At this mention, Trump appeared very excited, believing that an agreement between the US and India would soon be reached.
Since early April, the Modi government has been negotiating with the US. During this period, Treasury Secretary Yellen tried many methods to pressure Modi to make concessions. However, Modi was relatively tough before, as he clearly understood: "Japan and the EU have not compromised, so India does not need to make a decision so early."
However, since the outbreak of the India-Pakistan crisis, Modi's attitude towards the US has changed significantly. If Trump's prediction is true and India really quickly reaches a compromising agreement with the US, it will certainly be detrimental to the overall global trade situation. In fact, we could say: this has damaged the favorable situation that China worked hard for over a month to secure for the world.
Lavrov knows that China has always been very clear-headed, so at this moment, his reminder to China and India is essentially hoping that Modi does not change his strategy towards the US and the West due to the India-Pakistan war. However, there are two pressures that Modi cannot face or explain domestically:
1. The first pressure is that despite all his efforts, he cannot convince all Indian citizens that the Indian army defeated Pakistan. On May 15th, some Indian citizens took to the streets demanding that Modi disclose more details. Now, the officials of the Modi government are also basically unwilling to accept media interviews, fearing that saying too much might expose their weaknesses.
2. The second pressure is that the leader of the opposition party in India will not let go of Modi, demanding an explanation: "Why did the attack on Pakistan stop after just a few days?" Modi refuses to admit that they lost to Pakistan, so he cannot explain why the fighting stopped.
Due to these two pressures, Modi wants to divert the conflict abroad. Recently, besides causing trouble for China, he has also caused trouble for Turkey and Azerbaijan, claiming that these countries support Pakistan. With so many enemies around him, the Modi government naturally needs American support; otherwise, it will become increasingly difficult for him to stand firm in Asia. This may be the real reason why he compromises with Trump. We will continue to follow developments closely.
